Lab Created Diamonds Vs Natural Diamonds

Lab Diamond Versus Natural Diamond

I have 8 points to deliver. From there – you can decide what’s best for you. After all. It’s your piece.

1. Origin:

Lab-created diamonds: Are grown in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes, simulating the conditions under which natural diamonds form deep within the Earth.

Natural Diamonds: Are formed naturally over billions of years deep within the Earth’s mantle under extreme heat and pressure.

2. Composition:

Lab-Created Diamonds: Have the same chemical composition as natural diamonds, consisting of carbon atoms arranged in a crystal lattice structure. They are, essentially, real diamonds.

Natural Diamonds: Are also composed of carbon atoms arranged in the same crystal lattice structure.

3. Rarity and Source:

Lab-created diamonds: Are more abundant and can be produced on demand, making them less rare than natural diamonds. They are sourced from labs.

Natural Diamonds: These are rare and are mined from diamond-bearing deposits in various parts of the world, forming the beauty that nature has to offer, matured over time.

4. Cost:

Lab-Created Diamonds: These are generally more affordable than natural diamonds of comparable quality due to their controlled production.

Natural Diamonds: Tend to be more expensive due to their rarity and the costs associated with the production.

5. Ethics and Environmental Impact:

Lab-Created Diamonds: These are considered more ethical and environmentally friendly since they do not involve the ecological impact associated with diamond mining.

Natural Diamonds: Can have environmental/social impacts, if they are not from a reputable source. Choose your jeweller wisely.

6. Quality and Appearance:

Lab-Created Diamonds: Can exhibit excellent quality with fewer inclusions (flaws/imperfections) and exceptional clarity. They can also be found in various colours.

Natural Diamonds: Come in a wide range of qualities, including; included, rare, and flawless. They can also exhibit excellent quality and colour variations, but you have to pay the price. Check out this link for some beautiful pieces.

7. Certification and Grading:

Lab-Created Diamonds: These are graded by reputable gemological laboratories using the same standards as natural diamonds, ensuring transparency and quality assurance. Most Popular laboratory: International Gemological Institute = (IGI)

Natural Diamonds: Similarly, natural diamonds are also graded by gemological institutions to assess their quality, including the 4 Cs: carat weight, cut, colour, and clarity to ensure transparency and quality assurance, most popular laboratory: Gemological Institute of America = (GIA)

8. Market Acceptance

Lab-Created Diamonds: Popularity is steadily increasing due to piece of mind as well as their affordability and quality.

Natural Diamonds: These have been a traditional choice in jewellery for centuries and continue to hold significant value in the market due to their rarity.

Final Thoughts:

Ultimately, the choice between lab-created and natural diamonds depends on your personal preferences, budget, and desired characteristics. Both types have their unique advantages, and you should choose the option that aligns best with your or your significant other’s lifestyle, needs and wants.

Don’t choose what is popular, cheaper or more expensive. Choose what is best for you.

Hope this helps Family.

More Affordable

When you are shopping on a budget, a lab created diamond ring has all the luster appeal of a natural diamond with a much smaller price tag. Even in a one-to-one comparison of a natural to synthetic diamond of the same size yields substantial savings.

Better Quality

Lab created diamond rings that are manufactured above the ground in a lab facility show less strain in the structure of the crystal and have fewer defects. The gemstone is whiter, brighter and overall better than dirt diamonds and receives a higher purity rating.

Environmentally Friendly

The extraction of diamonds calls for massive amounts of fossil fuels, not to mention the toll it takes on the Earth’s landscape itself. Synthetic diamonds that are mined in labs do not damage any ecosystems or watersheds and therefore have become a wildly popular choice for today’s environmentally conscious couples. Cultivating diamonds in labs becomes more sustainable as each year passes while diamond mining from the ground becomes increasingly less sustainable.

How Is A Lab Diamond Created

Hold onto your hats! Let’s dive in!

Lab-grown diamonds, also known as synthetic or cultured diamonds, are created through a complex and precise process that simulates the natural conditions under which diamonds form within the Earth. This process can be broken down into several key steps:

1. – Diamond Seed Selection: The process begins with a tiny diamond seed, which serves as the foundation for the growth of the lab-grown diamond. These seeds are typically natural diamonds or can also be created in the lab. (Higher quality – Typically natural)

2. – High-Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) or Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD): There are two primary methods for growing lab-grown diamonds.

    a. – HPHT Method: In this method, the diamond seed is placed in a press that simulates the intense heat and pressure found deep within the Earth’s crust where diamonds are formed. Carbon source material, often in the form of graphite, is also placed in the press. High temperature and pressure cause the carbon atoms to bond together and form a diamond crystal around the seed.

    b. – CVD Method: In the CVD method, a diamond seed is placed in a chamber filled with a carbon-rich gas, such as methane. When the gas is heated, it breaks down into its carbon atoms. These carbon atoms then settle onto the diamond seed, layer by layer, forming a diamond over time.

Crystal Growth: Regardless of the method used, the diamond continues to grow layer by layer, atom by atom, over a period of weeks to months. The growth is precisely controlled to create the desired size and quality of the diamond. Of course all different qualities are available in lab as well.

Cutting and Polishing:

Once the diamond has reached its desired size, it is removed from the growth chamber. Once removed – It is cut and polished, just like a natural diamond, to achieve its final shape and brilliance.

Quality Control:

Lab-grown diamonds go through rigorous quality control processes to assess their colour, clarity, and carat weight. The same as a natural diamond. Gemologists apply the same grading standards as natural diamonds.

Final steps:

The final steps include giving the diamond any finishing touches if necessary and finally – the laser inscription for identification purposes, and it is ready to be set in jewellery.
